How YouTube thumbnails work

Every video's thumbnails sit at predictable addresses on i.ytimg.com, keyed by the video ID: maxresdefault.jpg (1280×720), sddefault.jpg (640×480), hqdefault.jpg (480×360), mqdefault.jpg (320×180) and default.jpg (120×90). This tool just extracts the ID from your link and shows those five files — no API key, no server, nothing stored. Older or low-resolution uploads never received a maxresdefault; YouTube then answers with a grey 120×90 placeholder, which the tool detects and marks as unavailable rather than letting you download a blank.

Which size to use

Always the largest that exists. A 1280×720 JPEG is around 100–200 KB, fine for a blog post, a slide or a video-list thumbnail on your own site. The 480×360 hqdefault is the one embedded players and most third-party sites historically used, and it carries black letterbox bars on 16:9 videos; maxresdefault and mqdefault are true 16:9 without bars.

Copyright, plainly

A thumbnail belongs to the video's creator like any other image. Downloading one for reference, for a link preview to their video, for commentary or for your own channel's files is ordinary use; re-uploading it as your own artwork is not. When in doubt, credit and link to the original video.

Getting the video link

Frequently asked questions

Why is the maximum size unavailable for some videos?

YouTube generates maxresdefault.jpg only for videos uploaded at 720p or higher (and some older ones never got it). When it is missing, YouTube returns a grey placeholder, which the tool detects and greys out. The 480×360 hqdefault exists for every video.

The download button opened the image in a new tab — what now?

Right-click the image and choose "Save image as…". Some browsers refuse to save cross-site images directly through a script, so the tool opens the image for you instead. Either way the file comes straight from YouTube.

Does this work for Shorts, playlists and live streams?

Shorts and live streams, yes — they are ordinary videos with different URLs. Playlists have no thumbnail of their own; open one video from the playlist and paste that link.

Can I use a downloaded thumbnail on my site?

As a link preview to that video, in commentary, or for your own channel's videos — yes, that is normal use. Reusing someone's thumbnail as your own artwork is a copyright problem. Credit and link to the video when in doubt.

Is anything uploaded or logged?

No. The video ID is extracted in your browser and the images are requested from YouTube's servers by your browser. This site never receives the link or the picture.
