How to use Compress Image

Which format should you choose?

WebP typically produces files 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, and it is supported by every browser released in the last several years. It is the right default for anything going on a website.

JPG remains the safest choice for photos you will email, upload to older systems, or hand to someone who might open them in dated software. It cannot store transparency.

PNG is lossless, so it will not blur fine detail — use it for screenshots, logos, and any image with transparency. Expect much larger files than the other two.

How much can you actually save?

A typical 12-megapixel phone photo comes off the camera at 3–5 MB. At 80% quality re-encoded to WebP, that usually lands between 300 and 600 KB — a 85–90% reduction with no difference most people can spot on a screen.

Images that are already optimised will not shrink much further, and re-encoding them can make them slightly larger. This tool detects that and keeps your original file instead of handing back a worse one.

Frequently asked questions

Does compressing an image reduce its quality?

Some, but usually not enough to see. JPG and WebP are lossy formats — they discard detail the human eye is poor at noticing. At 80% quality the difference is invisible in normal viewing. Below about 50% you will start to see softness and blocky artefacts around edges. Choose PNG if you need zero quality loss.

Are my images uploaded to your server?

No. This tool uses your browser's canvas engine to re-encode the file locally. Your images never travel across the network, and we never see them. You can confirm it yourself: disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the compressor still works.

Is there a file size or file count limit?

You can queue 20 images at a time, each up to 50 MB. These limits exist to protect your own browser from running out of memory, not to push you toward a paid plan — there isn't one.

Why did my file get bigger instead of smaller?

That happens when the original was already well optimised, or when you convert a simple graphic to a lossy format. When we detect the compressed version is larger, we hand back your original file untouched.

Does compression remove EXIF data like GPS location?

Yes. Re-encoding through the canvas drops all EXIF metadata, including camera model, timestamps and GPS coordinates. That is good for privacy when sharing photos publicly, but keep an original copy if that metadata matters to you.
