Which format should you pick?
WebP produces files roughly 25–35% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality and supports transparency and animation. Every browser released in the last several years supports it. It is the right default for anything going on a website.
JPG is the universal fallback — every device and every piece of software made in the last three decades can open it. Use it when compatibility matters more than size. It cannot store transparency.
PNG is lossless, so it never introduces compression artefacts. Right for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with transparency. Expect files several times larger than the other two for photographic content.
Converting to JPG loses transparency
JPG has no alpha channel. Converting a transparent PNG to JPG has to fill the transparent areas with something — we use white by default, which you can switch off. Without flattening, browsers render those areas as black, which is rarely what anyone wants.
Converting will not restore lost quality
Converting a heavily compressed JPG to PNG produces a large lossless copy of an already-degraded image. The artefacts are baked in — the file just gets bigger. Always convert from the highest-quality original you have.

Why did my transparent PNG turn white as a JPG?

Can I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?
Only if your browser can decode HEIC — Safari on Apple devices can, most others cannot. If the file will not load, export as JPG on the phone first.
