Why multi-step downscaling looks better
Browsers use a fast, low-quality filter when an image is scaled down by a large factor in one step, which produces aliasing — jagged edges and shimmering detail. Halving the image repeatedly until it is within 2× of the target, then doing the final draw, samples far more of the original pixels. It costs a few milliseconds and the difference is clearly visible on detailed photos.
Never enlarge if you can avoid it
Making an image larger cannot add detail that was never captured — the result is soft and blurry. The "don't enlarge" option is on by default. If you genuinely need a bigger image, re-export from the original source at a higher resolution rather than upscaling.

Will resizing reduce my image quality?

How do I resize without stretching?

1920px wide is plenty for a full-width hero; 800px suits in-article images. Serving a 4000px photo scaled down in CSS wastes bandwidth and hurts your page speed score.
