🔒 Runs in your browser — files never uploaded ⚡ No signup 💯 Free
Make a meme from any image: add the classic top and bottom captions in bold white Impact with a black outline, size them with a slider, and download the result as PNG or JPG — with no watermark and nothing uploaded. Use your own photo, a screenshot, or start from a blank coloured square for a text-only post.
How to use Meme Generator
- Drop an image (or click "blank square" for a text-only meme).
- Type the top and bottom text. Line breaks are kept; long lines wrap automatically.
- Adjust size, font and colours if the classic look is not what you want.
- Download. PNG keeps every pixel; JPG is smaller for sharing.
The format
Top line sets up, bottom line lands the joke — the "image macro" that has been the default meme layout since the mid-2000s. The look is specific: Impact, all capitals, white fill, black outline. The outline is what makes the text readable over any photo, dark or light; this tool draws it the way the originals did, stroke first and fill on top, so the letters stay crisp.
Getting the text right
- Keep it short. Two lines per caption at most; the size slider lets you shrink it when a line is long.
- Fonts: Impact is on Windows and macOS. On phones and Linux it may be replaced by a similar heavy sans — the fallback is chosen to look as close as possible.
- Manual line breaks (Enter in the text box) are respected; otherwise text wraps at the image edge.
- Turn off ALL CAPS for the newer "deep-fried" and Twitter-caption styles, or switch the font to serif or comic for irony.
Where it runs
Entirely in your browser: the image is drawn onto a canvas, the text is drawn over it, and the download comes straight from that canvas. Your photos never reach a server, and there is no watermark because there is nothing to upsell.
To resize the result for a specific platform, use the social media resizer; to add a small credit or logo instead of a caption, the watermark tool.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a watermark?
No. The image is generated in your browser and downloaded directly; there is no server adding a logo and nothing to pay to remove it.
Where are the meme templates?
This tool captions the image you bring — a screenshot, a photo, a template saved from anywhere. Templates are copyrighted images that this site does not host; search for the one you want, save it, and drop it here.
Why does the font look different on my phone?
Impact ships with Windows and macOS but not with most phones or Linux. The fallback picks the heaviest sans-serif available, which is close but not identical. The download uses the same font as the preview, so what you see is what you get.
Can I put text somewhere other than top and bottom?
Not in this tool — it deliberately does the classic format only. For free placement, add the text in an image editor; for a small corner credit, the watermark tool positions text anywhere.
Is my image uploaded?
No. It is drawn on a canvas in your browser, captioned there, and downloaded from there. Nothing leaves your device.
