Every photo from a phone or camera carries hidden metadata: the device that took it, the exact date and time, camera settings — and very often the GPS coordinates of where you stood. Drop a JPEG here to see exactly what it's carrying, then download a cleaned copy with all of it removed.

The cleaning is done at the byte level — metadata segments are cut out of the file without re-encoding the image — so the cleaned copy is pixel-identical to the original. Zero quality loss, and of course nothing is uploaded: checking a photo for private data by sending it to a server would be absurd.

What EXIF data reveals

The headline risk is location: GPS coordinates precise to a few metres, embedded by default by most phone cameras. A photo of your new sofa posted to a marketplace can carry your home address; a shared holiday photo says exactly when you were away and where. Beyond GPS there's the capture timestamp, the device make and model (sometimes a serial number), the software used to edit, and occasionally an owner name.

Doesn't social media strip this already?

The big platforms do strip EXIF from what they display — but they read it first, and plenty of channels don't strip anything: email attachments, cloud drive links, marketplace listings on smaller sites, forums, your own website. The safe habit is simple: strip before it leaves your machine, then it doesn't matter who does what downstream.

Why "no re-encoding" matters

Most metadata removers open the image and re-save it, which recompresses the JPEG and visibly degrades it — using a privacy tool shouldn't cost quality. This tool instead removes the metadata segments from the file structure and leaves the compressed image data byte-for-byte untouched. The colour profile (ICC) is deliberately kept, because removing it changes how the image renders — that would not be "lossless" in any sense that matters.

What about PNG, HEIC and screenshots?

PNG rarely carries meaningful metadata (screenshots are generally safe). HEIC photos from iPhones do carry EXIF — convert them with the HEIC to JPG tool first, then clean the JPG here. And note the conversion itself already drops most metadata.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing EXIF reduce photo quality?

Not here. The metadata lives in separate segments of the JPEG file structure; this tool removes those segments and leaves the compressed image data byte-for-byte untouched. Tools that "clean" by re-saving the image do recompress it — that's the shortcut this tool exists to avoid.

Do my photos really contain my location?

If taken on a phone with location services on for the camera — very likely yes, to within a few metres. Drop one in and see. Phones ask once, people tap allow, and every photo after that is geotagged. You can also turn it off at the source: camera location permission in your phone's settings.

Is the photo uploaded to check it?

No — that would defeat the purpose. Parsing and cleaning both run in your browser; the photo never leaves your device. It's also why there's no file size limit.

Doesn't Instagram/Facebook strip EXIF anyway?

From what they display to others, yes — after reading it themselves. And many channels strip nothing: email, cloud-drive links, marketplace sites, forums. Cleaning before sharing covers every channel at once instead of trusting each one.

Why does the cleaned photo keep the colour profile?

Because the ICC profile changes how the image looks — strip it and colours can shift, especially wide-gamut phone photos. It contains no personal data, so removing it would trade image fidelity for nothing. Only genuinely identifying segments (EXIF, XMP, IPTC, comments) are removed.

What about PNG and HEIC files?

PNG rarely carries meaningful metadata — screenshots are generally clean already. HEIC photos do carry EXIF: convert with the HEIC to JPG converter (which itself drops most metadata), then verify here.
