Choosing your settings
Grid size needs to comfortably exceed your longest word. As a rule of thumb, a 15×15 grid handles about 15 words of up to 10 letters. If words will not fit, the tool tells you which ones rather than silently dropping them.
Difficulty comes mostly from direction settings. Horizontal and vertical only is right for young children. Adding diagonals raises it considerably. Enabling backwards words makes the puzzle genuinely hard, because solvers can no longer scan in one consistent direction.
How the grid is built
Words are placed longest first — placing short words early fragments the grid and leaves nowhere for the long ones to go. Each placement then prefers positions where the word crosses one already on the grid at a shared letter. Crossings are what make a word search feel dense and satisfying; without them you get isolated words floating in random filler, which is both easier and duller.
If some words cannot be placed, the whole grid is rebuilt and retried a few times, since a single unlucky early placement can block everything after it.
Printing
The print button hides the rest of the page and prints just the puzzle and word bank, with the answer highlighting removed automatically. Generate, check the answers, hide them again, then print.
