Choosing a difficulty
Easy keeps the first and last letters in place and only jumbles the middle. This relies on a well-known reading effect: with the outer letters intact, the brain still recognises the word reasonably easily. It is the right setting for younger children, where the goal is confidence rather than frustration.
Normal scrambles every letter. Hard additionally forces most letters to move, so the result never accidentally lands close to the original.
Why a scramble sometimes looks barely scrambled
Short words have very few arrangements — a three-letter word has only six, and one of them is the answer. Words with repeated letters are worse: eel has just three distinct arrangements. This tool retries the shuffle until the result differs from the original and forces a swap if it cannot find one, so a puzzle never gives itself away. It cannot manufacture variety that the word does not contain, though, so very short entries will always look lightly disguised.
