Estimate your body fat percentage from a tape measure using the U.S. Navy method — the circumference formula the military uses for fitness assessments, accurate to within a few points of a lab scan when measured carefully. How to use Body Fat Calculator
- Choose units and sex — the formulas differ for men and women.
- Measure with a tape: neck just below the larynx; waist at the navel (men) or narrowest point (women); hips at the widest point (women). Tape snug, not squeezing.
- Enter height, weight and age — weight and age drive the mass figures and the BMI comparison, not the Navy percentage itself.
- Read your percentage and category. Re-measure monthly under the same conditions to track the trend.
How the U.S. Navy method works
Developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center (1984), it predicts body density from body circumferences and height, using logarithms because the relationship isn't linear. Men: waist minus neck against height. Women: waist plus hip minus neck against height. Compared with underwater weighing it has a standard error of about 3.5% for men and 4% for women — meaning a reading of 20% most likely sits between 16.5% and 23.5%. That's comparable to consumer bioimpedance scales and far better than BMI, at zero cost.
Why weight isn't in the formula
It surprises people, but circumferences already encode it: two men of the same height and waist have similar body density regardless of what the scale says. Weight enters only afterwards, to split the percentage into fat mass and lean mass — the numbers worth tracking, since a diet that drops lean mass is a bad diet.
Reading the categories
The ACE table is a general-population guide, not a target. "Essential fat" is the minimum for normal physiological function — sustained levels there are unhealthy, not aspirational. "Athletes" is what trained athletes tend to carry in season. "Average" is where most healthy adults land. Women's ranges run roughly 8–10 points higher than men's at every level because of essential sex-specific fat; comparing across sexes is meaningless.
Measuring well
- Same time of day, before eating, tape parallel to the floor.
- Relaxed — don't suck in or push out. Take each measurement twice and average.
- The neck reading dominates the result: 1 cm of neck error moves the percentage by roughly 1.5 points. Measure it carefully, just below the Adam's apple, tape sloped slightly downward at the front.

Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the tape-measure method?
Within roughly ±3–4 percentage points of a DEXA or hydrostatic test for most people, when measured carefully — on par with bioimpedance scales and better than BMI. It is least accurate at the extremes (very lean athletes, very high body fat). Its real strength is consistency: measured the same way each month, the trend is reliable even if the absolute number is a little off.
Where exactly do I measure?
Neck: just below the larynx (Adam's apple), tape sloping slightly down at the front. Waist: men at the navel, women at the narrowest point, breathing normally. Hips (women): the widest point around the buttocks. Tape horizontal, snug but not compressing skin.
Why do the Navy and BMI estimates disagree?
They measure different things. BMI infers fat from weight and height alone, so a muscular person reads high and a sedentary slim person reads low. The Navy method uses where your circumference actually is. When they differ by more than about 5 points, trust the tape — after re-checking the neck measurement, which has the biggest effect.
What body fat percentage should I aim for?
For general health, anywhere in the ACE "fitness" or "average" bands is fine — roughly 14–24% for men and 21–31% for women. Lower is not automatically better: sustained levels near essential fat impair hormones, immunity and recovery. Athletes cycle down for competition and back up afterwards for a reason.
Why does the Navy formula ignore my weight?
Because circumferences already predict body density well on their own; adding weight didn't improve the original study's fit. Weight is used here only afterwards, to turn the percentage into kilograms or pounds of fat and lean mass.
